Nadia Comaneci (Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej currently Onesti) Romanian Gymnast born November 12, 1961. She was the first Romanian to score a of 10 at an Olympic competition. Bela Karrolyi, an Romanian gymnastics instructor who later became the coach for Comaneci and first became aware of Comaneci aged six. Her first competition was in the National Junior Championships in which she was 13th place in the year 1969. In 1970, Comaneci took home the title. She won three golds in her very first contest, a junior pre-Olympic meet in 1972 that was held by communist countries. In 1973 and 1974, she was the junior all-round champion. She took home four gold medals and one silver medals in her debut competition as a senior which took place in the year 1975. This was the first time she had competed as a senior.
